Saddle River Decides to Cull Deer – COUNCIL APPROVED

Saddle River will cull its deer poplulation

After Years of Debate Saddle River Finally Decides to Cull the Deer Population

The Mayor of Saddle River – Mayor Kurpis – and the Town Council has passed two resolutions to implement a deer culling plan.

An issue that has been voted on and debated in length within the Saddle River community has finally reached a conclusion. The Town has decided to put in place a cull plan to cut down the rampant deer population.

The deer plan was adopted in two stages by the Town Council.
The first Council vote on July 26 was 4 to 1 (Carpenter/Jensen/Schulstad/Yates “yes”; Gray “no”; Salazer absent).
The Council second vote on August 22 was 3 to 1 (Jensen/Salazer/Yates “yes”; Gray “no”; Carpenter/Schulstad absent).

The Borough has posted the background documents on its website:  https://www.saddleriver.org/wmp

There is no hard date yet for the program to start. Final details still need to be hammered out with the Town public officials, the residents and the  United Bowhunters of New Jersey, who were authorized for the discharging of bows to cull the deer.
Saddle River News recommends all residents to read the Saddle River documents to understand the parameters of the culling and how it affects their properties specifically.
In closing we use the quote from Mayor Kurpis:
“Your Mayor and Council would prefer not to cull the deer. However, there are very serious public safety concerns that can no longer be ignored. In addition, the landscape of Saddle River has been damaged over the past few years as deer have eaten forest understory, hedges and gardens. This reduces the enjoyment and thus value that residents receive from being homeowners in Saddle River while impairing the health of our forests for years to come.”
