Historic Saddle River Hardware Store Demoished

Saddle River Hardware Store

The Old Saddle River Hardware Building was Torn Down

The historic hardware store in Saddle River, New Jersey, dating back to the 1840s and located on East Allendale Road, has been demolished to pave the way for a modern wellness center.

This iconic building had remained vacant since 2016, and unfortunately, it was deemed unsafe for occupation in March 2022 due to multiple storms and floods in the downtown area where it was located. As a result, the decision to create a replacement structure gained momentum.

In a nod to preserving the character of the original building, the new construction will incorporate salvaged siding and maintain the same design and footprint, including the beloved Barnstable Maroon color scheme.

The original building holds a special place in the nationally registered Saddle River Center Historic District, which encompasses notable locations such as Barnstable Court across the street and residences on West Saddle River Road, north of East Allendale Road. Initially known as the Woodruff Packer Foundry, this historical structure played a pivotal role in manufacturing plowshares and wagon wheels. The building’s uniqueness is further highlighted by its construction over a horizontal water wheel, allowing it to harness the power of the Saddle River to operate its furnace.

It will be rebuilt as a wellness center by the current owners who are doctors living in town.
